Ultrasound imaging, commonly also referred to as sonography, is a diagnostic test that uses high frequency sound waves to obtain images of anatomical structures through body tissues. The echoes from the high frequency sound waves are recorded and transformed into video or photographic images. Ultrasound is a safe and painless method of imaging. It can also be used as a method to guide physicians while performing biopsies. Ultrasound may be used in conjunction with other diagnostic procedures or by itself.
