In certain areas of the body, such as the lungs, tumors can move as a patient breathes. In the past, this tumor movement has made mapping and precise treatment difficult. This forced radiation oncologists to expand the treatment area to ensure they treated the whole tumor, which affected healthy tissue.
At DMG, we use respiratory gating technology to accurately target tumors by adjusting treatment based on breathing motion and only deliver radiation when the tumor enters a certain pre-determined area which spares healthy tissue.
Respiratory gating is typically combined with Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) to deliver the most precise treatment.
