DOWNERS GROVE, Ill. — As a part of DuPage Medical Group’s (DMG) Integrated Oncology Program, urologic oncologists Drs. Amit R. Patel and Ranko Miocinovic are performing leading edge, robotic cystectomy surgery as a minimally invasive option for bladder cancer treatment. This minimally invasive procedure involves removing part, or all, of the bladder, lymph node dissection and urinary diversion through small keyhole incisions.
While surgical cystectomy cases in the Chicagoland area are still predominantly performed by opening the abdominal cavity, Drs. Miocinovic and Patel are making minimally invasive surgical options more widely available in the suburbs. Recently DMG held a medical education event for other local urologists and medical professionals to teach them about the oncologic efficacy of performing robotic cystectomy based on current literature and create awareness of its availability in the suburban area. Both physicians have extensive experience performing this procedure.
Robotic cystectomy is a minimally invasive surgical method for bladder cancer that utilizes the da Vinci Surgical System. The system involves use of a digital 3D, high definition camera with robotic arms, which are used to imitate the surgeon’s movements, amplifying their vision, control and precision. This advanced robotic procedure offers bladder cancer patients the prospect of combining effective surgery with less problematic post-surgical recovery. It is fast becoming the preferred method for bladder cancer surgery. The da Vinci Surgical System provides the physician with a superior visual planes and improved surgical dexterity during bladder removal and, if necessary, reconstructive procedure. Patients can experience a shorter hospital stay, less blood loss, fewer complications and faster recovery time than with an open procedure.
“Robotic cystectomy is a highly advanced method to treat a patient with bladder cancer. While this procedure has been taking off around the country, the Chicago area has been slow to adopt this new method of care.” says Dr. Amit Patel. “We hope to make robotic cystectomy more available for patients in this area, to make sure they are getting the best treatment, with shortest recovery possible,” adds Dr. Ranko Miocinovic.
Drs. Miocinovic and Patel see patients at multiple locations throughout the suburban Chicago area. To make an appointment, or to get a second opinion on your cancer treatment, patients can schedule a consultation online or call 630−790−1220.
