DOWNERS GROVE, Ill. — DuPage Medical Group (DMG), the largest independent, multi-specialty physician group in the Chicago area, continues to expand its offerings and remain at the forefront of emerging treatment options to provide high-quality urologic care for patients. During the month of November, DMG Urologists introduced the UroLift® System, an additional treatment option for patients diagnosed with Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia.
Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) is a condition caused by an enlarged prostate, which produces a wide range of urinary symptoms, including increased frequency and urgency to urinate, difficulty emptying the bladder and a weakened stream. These urinary problems can interrupt sleep and cause a decrease in a patient’s overall quality of life. In the past, the only way to effectively treat BPH was through an invasive surgical procedure to remove the prostate or the prolonged use of medication to alleviate the associated symptoms. DMG is proud to offer patients suffering with BPH a new treatment option.
The UroLift® System is an FDA-approved minimally-invasive approach to treating BPH that lifts the enlarged prostate tissue so that it no longer blocks the urethra. During the process, there is no cutting, heating or removal of prostate tissue. The procedure is performed on an outpatient basis, either in the physician’s office or in an ambulatory surgical center, requiring only local anesthesia. Typically, no overnight stay or catheterization is needed. Following the procedure, patients experience symptom relief in as little as two weeks.
UroLift® may be appropriate for patients who meet the following criteria:
- Individuals who have tried prescription therapy for BPH and either experienced adverse side effects or don’t want to be on a daily medication.
- Individuals who want to avoid major surgery due to potential risks or possible complications.
- Individuals who want to treat symptoms with minimal downtime and in a way that does not impair sexual function.
Urologist, Dr. Craig Smith began performing the UroLift® treatment for DuPage Medical Group patients in mid-November.
As with any procedure, UroLift® may not be appropriate for all BPH patients. Patients can schedule an appointment with a DMG urologist to learn more by calling 630−790−1221 or visiting www.dulyhealthandcare.com/services/urology.
